A lot of players jump online with stacked 99 overall lineups early, but if you understand which cards actually perform well in-game, you can still compete with a budget squad.
In my experience, the most important thing in MLB 26 is not always overall rating. Swing animations, active quirks, pitch mixes, and player feel matter way more than people expect. Some 84-88 overall cards honestly perform better than expensive diamonds because their swings are smoother or their pitches tunnel better.
The good news is that there are a ton of free cards available through programs, Conquest maps, and seasonal content. On top of that, the marketplace has several cheap “budget beast” cards that play far above their price.

What really makes him good, though, is the swing. It feels quick and consistent, especially on inside fastballs. Even if the power numbers do not look elite on paper, he produces a lot of doubles and line drives.
He is usually very affordable on the marketplace and plays better than many higher-rated catchers.
First Base – Bryce Harper
Bryce Harper is one of the best free hitters available early through the WBC programs. His swing has always been top-tier in MLB The Show, and that continues in MLB 26.
The combination of power, contact, and clutch hitting makes him feel like a premium card immediately. Even against strong online pitching, Harper consistently generates hard contact.
If you are starting Diamond Dynasty, finishing the WBC programs for Harper should be one of your first priorities.
Second Base – Travis Bazzana
Travis Bazzana quickly became one of my favorite free infielders.
He is not just a contact hitter. He has surprising gap power and enough speed to stretch singles into doubles. His swing is smooth, and he handles both lefties and righties well.
For a free card, he feels extremely complete.
Third Base – Mark Vientos
Mark Vientos is basically pure power.
If you can square up the ball consistently, he absolutely destroys mistakes. A lot of budget players struggle because their lineups lack home run threats, and Vientos fixes that immediately.
The contact stats are not amazing, but once you add Parallel boosts or equipment upgrades, the card becomes much easier to use online.
Shortstop – Jesús Made
Jesús Made is one of those cards that simply plays above its overall.
The switch-hitting helps a lot, but the real reason players love this card is the swing animation. It is compact, repeatable, and easy to time. That matters much more online than raw attributes sometimes.
He also gives solid speed and defense at shortstop, which is important early in Diamond Dynasty.
